Critical reception
Paige, from Eyeliner Wings said "Yes! I quite like this track. The curse words have no place, really, they don't add anything to the song and seem a bit unnecessary. It's very catchy but it gets a little bit too repetitive." @NotQuiteBeckett from Writers Block states that we are hearing the lyrics coming more from Melanie than her actual character and also without showing her "emotions without giving a fuck about what everyone else says." The Moodernretro Magazine noted the chorus for being a really fun repetitive chorus and that it isn't to "corny or foreseeable." and also saying that it is "A very good radio play sort of song."

Background and reception
David Watt from NOISE says: If you haven't got the guts to watch brutality, you might want to skip the video intro or maybe the entire video. The intro shows us 'rabbit doctor' who hits a pregnant woman right in the stomach - something that everyone can't see. But if you have not explored Miss Martinez's work before, this is a perfect video to start. It tells you essentially about Melanie Martinez's sensibilities and work. You can watch the video below and read our reviews of other work from Martinez to explore her music.
Synopsis
Francesca McKernon from ODYSSEY said: "Cry Baby, starts out with a mother giving birth aided by doctors in bunny masks. After the baby is delivered and starts crying, as babies usually do, the mother is clearly aggravated and names her newborn 'Cry Baby'. Melanie Martinez wears baby outfits and bibs etc. making most people semi-uncomfortable. I personally like that she makes people uncomfortable, because it forces people to think out of their normal realm of reality." The video also shows Cry Baby getting fed by the drunk mother but then refuses to eat it, She is shown playing with toys as well.
